      Cataracts: Overview

What Is Involved in Cataract Surgery?

The idea behind modern cataract surgery is quite simple: the surgeon removes the eye’s clouded natural lens and replaces it with a high-performance, clear lens implant that restores your vision.

Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the U.S. and is very safe and effective. It is an outpatient procedure that is virtually painless and takes approximately 20-30 minutes. Recovery time is short and usually lasts only a couple of days. Although there may be a short adjustment period, many patients notice a significant improvement in their vision immediately after the procedure.

Can I Choose a Different Replacement Lens?

If being able to reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses is important to you, there are other replacement lens options to choose from that will correct vision at any or all distances.

These high-performance lenses are safe and have proven effective in helping many people achieve the type of vision best suited to their lifestyle. Your doctor can help you decide which lens is the best fit for your needs.

Although there are many different brands, there are three basic types of lenses to choose from. Click below to learn more about each option.

Also, be sure to check with your insurance provider for coverage details before deciding on a different lens. Many times, choosing a lifestyle lens is considered an elective upgrade to your procedure and is not covered by insurance. Should this be the case, Hollingshead Barrett offers financing through CareCredit* that can help make this a budget-friendly alternative.

Will I Still Need to Wear Glasses After Cataract Surgery?

      The short answer is maybe.

The standard replacement lens used in cataract surgery is called a monofocal lens and provides improved vision for seeing objects at a distance. However, your distance vision may still need fine-tuning with glasses. And, because monofocal lenes cannot correct vision at close distances, glasses may also be needed for intermediate and near vision activities such as reading or using a computer.

Your doctor will be able to determine whether you will need glasses after surgery based on your unique needs.
